Dr. Howard Conant on discussing Seminar on Elementary and Secondary School Education in the Visual Arts, (a volume edited by H.C. Conant, NYU in 1965): “One thing I did after completing the seminar was to take some actual art masterpieces from the NYU Art Collection out into the schools (Washington Irving High School and Valley Stream, L.I., Elementary). I taught “art appreciation” to the kids, as best I could, and told them why, in great detail, I thought the original paintings by Picasso and Renoir were, to my mind, so great. Then I asked them to write down their own personal definition of art and a few other questions. A SIXTH grader from Valley Stream said that “art is the memory of a vision.” That blew my mind, but my experience in teaching many children has taught me that kids are incredible if just given a chance.” - personal correspondence January 11, 2008 |
